HARRY PARKER grew up in Wiltshire. He was educated at Falmouth College of Art and University College London. He joined the British Army when he was 23 and served in Iraq in 2007 and Afghanistan in 2009 as a Captain. He is now a writer and artist and lives in London.
THE SPECTATOR: Attempts by soldiers themselves to describe to us our 21st-century wars have come, so far, in a few recognisable varieties: the movie-ready tactical accounts narrated by infallible tough guys, grading into versions of what one Iraq war veteran-writer, Roy Scranton, has termed the ‘myth of the trauma hero’: those dramas of personal suffering that ignore, or even presumptively redeem, a war’s wider consequences. Certain more or less lachrymose recent Navy Seal memoirs, for example, have synthesised these two modes; more gifted introspections like Kevin Powers’s The Yellow Birds, with its callowly incontinent lyricism (‘fires on the hillsides… like a tattered quilt of fallen stars’), take the second as far as it can go. Whether these accounts are offered as true stories (dramatised) or novels (heavily autobiographical) is mostly irrelevant when their currency is always the same: the authors’ preciously rare and exotic experience of ‘the real thing...’.
Captain Tom Barnes is leading British troops in a war zone. Two boys are growing up there, sharing a prized bicycle and flying kites, before finding themselves separated once the soldiers appear in their countryside. On all sides of this conflict, people are about to be caught up in the violence, from the man who trains one boy to fight the infidel invaders to Barnes's family waiting for him to return home.
We see them not as they see themselves, but as all the objects surrounding them do: shoes and boots, a helmet, a trove of dollars, a drone, that bike, weaponry, a bag of fertilizer, a medal, a beer glass, a snowflake, dog tags, an exploding IED and the medical implements that are subsequently employed.
Anatomy of a Soldier is a moving, enlightening and fiercely dramatic novel about one man's journey of survival and the experiences of those around him. Forty-five objects, one unforgettable story.
LORENZO SILVA nació en el barrio madrileño de Carabanchel, estudió Derecho en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y ejerció como abogado de empresa desde el año 1992 hasta 2002. Ha escrito numerosos relatos, artículos y ensayos literarios, así como varias novelas, que le han valido reconocimiento internacional. Una de ellas, El alquimista impaciente, obtuvo el Premio Nadal del año 2000. Esta es la segunda en la que aparecen los que quizá sean sus personajes más conocidos: la pareja de la Guardia Civil formada por el brigada Bevilacqua y la sargento (en la última novela) Virginia Chamorro. Otra de sus obras, La flaqueza del bolchevique, fue finalista del Premio Nadal 1997 y ha sido adaptada al cine por el director Manuel Martín Cuenca. Ganador del Premio Planeta 2012 con la novela La marca del meridiano. Además de sus novelas policiacas, Silva tiene numerosos libros de no ficción, así como obras destinadas a jóvenes.
Pasados los cincuenta, y ya con más pasado que futuro, el subteniente Bevilacqua, veterano investigador de homicidios de la unidad central de la Guardia Civil, recibe una llamada del responsable de operaciones internacionales. Se reclama su presencia inmediata a 6.000 kilómetros de allí, en la base española de Herat, en Afganistán. Un militar español destinado en la base ha aparecido degollado, y, junto a él, el arma del delito: una hoz plegable de las usadas por los afganos para cortar la amapola de la que se extrae la droga que representa la principal fuente de riqueza del país. ¿Se trata del atentado de un talibán infiltrado? Podría ser, pero también que la muerte tuviera otro origen, porque el ataque no reviste la forma clásica de esa clase de acciones, sino que hace pensar en algún motivo personal.
La misión de Bevilacqua y los suyos no es otra que tratar de desenmascarar a un asesino que forzosamente ha de ser un habitante de ese espacio cerrado. Sus pesquisas, bajo el tórrido y polvoriento verano afgano, les llevarán a conocer a peculiares personajes y a adentrarse en la biografía del muerto, un veterano de misiones bélicas en el exterior que guarda más de un cadáver en el armario, para llegar a un desenlace inesperado y desconcertante.
